It’s true what they say, once you hit 40, a whole lot of things change. Now don’t get me wrong, my 40’s are LIT. I’ve never felt more alive and more sure of myself than I do at this moment. However, I’ve had to make some adjustments with how my body works. Now there are more fine lines, more silver in my hair and supplements have become a part of my morning routine. My skin is doing something new almost all the time as well. Here’s some of my healthy skincare tips for those of us over 40. Essentially, I’m starting fresh with my skincare routine and adjusting to the newness of it all.
TIP No 1- GOOD HYDRATION IS KEY
My current skincare routine includes lots and lots of hydration. I’ve had dry skin all my life, but with my current skin, I’m noticing that I’m a little oily in some areas that I haven’t been before. Now, I use products that are ideal for combination skin. I spend a good portion of my coin on serums and other treatments that penetrate the skin. For my morning routine, I add the Merit Great Skin Instant Glow Serum after washing my face and while my skin is still damp. This serum is lightweight and formulated with niacinamide, a key ingredient for improving skin texture.
My daytime moisturizer lately has been the Tula 24/7 Hydrating Moisturizer, and I alternate with Farmacy Honey Halo Ultra Hydrating Moisturizer. Both of these moisturizers layer well under my makeup and hydrate without leaving me feeling greasy. Lastly, don’t skip your SPF, seriously, sunscreen is that girl for protecting my skin from harmful UV rays and lessens my hyperpigmentation.
For my nighttime routine, I incorporate a facial oil like the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil. I received a sample of this through PR and have been loving it as my night oil. It’s lightweight and soothing. The evening primrose oil is fantastic and keeps my skin moisturized without leaving it oily. For my oily skin babes, moisturizing your skin is still super important. A good option for a serum that is oily skin friendly is the Derma E Advanced Peptide and Flora Collagen Serum.

Tip No 2- Add Retinol To Your Routine
As someone who once thought retinol was strictly for wrinkles, I was pleasantly surprised at all of its benefits. Not only does retinol treat signs of aging, it has helped to improve my skins texture and hyperpigmentation. My skin can get a bit dull, so adding a retinol 2-3 times a week in my nighttime routine has made a difference in treating dullness. Check out the reasons why retinol is the secret weapon in my routine. Currently my go to retinol serum is the L’oreal Revitalife Derm Intensive Retinol serum

TIP NO 3-BY ALL MEANS, EXFOLIATE
Lastly, no matter what stage you’re at in your skincare, exfoliation is absolutely essential. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. As you age, skin cell turnover is a little slower, so making sure I exfoliate a couple times a week. Exfoliating helps eliminate dull skin, unclogs pores, and reduces the look of dark marks from hyperpigmentation and acne scars. Not sure where to start, check out my Beginners Guide to Exfoliation here.
Hands down, the best skin exfoliator for me is the Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant. You can also exfoliate through a cleanser such as the Clarins One Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. An exfoliating cleanser is a good place to start if you’re looking to add this step to your routine.

Regardless of what stage you’re in with your skincare, the key is good care and consistency. For me, I’m getting to know my skin as it ages, and adjusting to the changes that I see. These healthy skin care tips have helped me get to know this new phase of my skin. Let me know in the comments what you’re using on your skin. Has your skin changed much as you’ve aged? I want to hear from you!
