Solo traveling has become one of my favorite things to do since 2010. Growing up, we always travelled, and I was used to road trips and summers at the beach. I first started my solo travel journey in 2010 after I graduated from college. I’m a late bloomer so I was in my 30’s, just graduating after ending a relationship and buying a house. I worked hard and decided I wanted a vacation to the Essence Festival in New Orleans followed by a beach trip to Florida. After that 10 day vacation, the solo travel but bit me.
The Beauty of Solo Travel
One of the best things about solo travel is being able to set my own schedule and itinerary. I am a relaxed traveler, so if I’m going to a beach resort, I’m spending most of my time at the beach, in the water on island time. So if you’re someone that likes early morning excursions, you can enjoy that without worrying if your travel mates will enjoy it as well. The most important thing I learned through solo traveling, is learning myself and being comfortable in my own company. Solo travel opens up my explorer side and finding out how people outside of my circle live. Travel enriches your life in so many ways and for me, the beauty of solo travel is the enrichment and freedom that comes with it.

Tips on Safety When Solo Traveling
Now, I”m all for adventure and having a good time on your trip. However, as a woman, I’m extra careful when I’m taking a solo trip. Here are some of my tips for having a great time but also being as safe as possible.
- Let your people know where you are. You don’t have to tell the world your location, but have a circle of at least two people who know where you’re going and your itinerary. Check in with them often, especially if you’re going on an excursion or leaving the area of where the majority of your trip is
- Utilize the concierge or staff at your hotel as a resources of where to go. They’ll be able to let you know if your plans are safe for a solo traveler. If you’re into getting into the local scene like I am, ask the hotel folks where to best experience the town. This is especially fun in a city like New Orleans because the neighborhoods are where the best food and parties are.
- Enjoy the drinks but don’t overdue it. As a solo traveler, you want to be as aware as possible and that could mean limiting the drinks so you can still keep your bearings. Know your limits.
- If you get a great Uber or Ride Share driver, ask them if you can utilize them exclusively for your rides around town. A lot of times drivers can make a bit more and will appreciate having a regular fare. Ps..I’ve done this as an Uber Driver before and it’s a great way to build relationships and have good money.
- Listen to your gut, if something feels off, then it probably is.
If you’re considering a solo vacation soon, do your research, plan accordingly and get ready to have some fun. Seriously, HAVE FUN, it’s such a beautiful privilege to be able to travel on your own. Take your camera, document your journey and take lots of photos of YOU. Solo travel is a time of celebration for me. It’s really my time to kick back, enjoy the water and scenery and decompress. If you’re taking a solo trip this summer, let me know in the comments.
